Enjoying The Sunshine In Ilfracombe!

The last few weeks have been wonderful weather, giving me time to enjoy the summer while it lasts! And where better it spend it than the beaches in Devon? First, we went to Ilfracombe –  a small town that has plenty of shops, cafes, entertainment and sand.
We had lunch at The Ilfracombe Fryer, a fish and chip takeaway and restaurant. The restaurant was very busy – we managed to get the last table. We had to wait a while to order, before we caught the attention of one of the waitresses at the counter. The food was tasty and well priced. I had the scampi and chips.

There are magnificent views of the sea and cliffs in Ilfracombe. Visitors often walk up the big hill to enjoy the sea breeze and see the whole of the town from the top.

There is also an Hockings ice cream van, famous ice cream in Devon. For those who like plays and shows, there is the Landmark theatre. During the day, there is also a cafe to take a break.

Iflramcombe has also transformed its public gardens since my last visit, and it looks so pretty!

Around the seaside, there are a number of art shops and galleries. I like this ice lolly piece.

Plus another thing Ilfracombe is famous for is Verity – the pregnant woman with a sword, courtesy of Damien Hirst. It first arrived a few years ago upon mixed reaction. Some say it is an eyesore for the town, some say it is expression of art, but no one can deny it is something that everyone is talking about. Many visitors take photos of the sculpture.

There is also St Nicholas’ Chapel which is situated on a hill next to the sea. Admission is free for the chapel, which was used as a place of worship since 1321. Nowadays, it is mainly used as a musuem with displays of ships and historic use of the chapel.

Another place we went to was the Ilfracombe Aquarium (£4.50 for adult, £3.50 for child). It was very busy and quite small, but there is some great sealife to see – nurse sharks, rays, starfishes and spider crabs to name but a few.
After all that walking, I needed to time to relax. Dolly’s cafe is a spacious unit with indoor and outdoor seating. I had a cream tea for £6.75 with a homemade scone, jam, Rodda’s clotted cream and Miles’ English tea – an indulgent treat! I was also given a loyalty card giving me 10% off everytime I visit.

There are many gift shops – I left with some shortbread and homemade caramel fudge from Fudgies.

Morrisons Gingerbread House

We recently got one of these Gingerbread House DIY sets from Morrisons, which looks very Christmassy. The photo on the box looked very impressive, I doubted I could recreate this look! …And despite my efforts, I could not! I tried my best! Included in the box are the gingerbread, plastic tray, packet of white icing and assorted sweets for decoration. The icing is already pre-made but requires you to massage it for 1 minute to soften it. However, I needed longer than this because the icing was still too hard. The gingerbread house comes in six pieces which are assembled with help of the plastic tray and some icing. This was fairly easy to do! The gingerbread smells delicious that I have to impose some self-control and not eat it… The tricky bit (and messy) was decorating the house. I found icing was difficult to do – sometimes it was too hard to get out of the bag, and sometimes it would not stick to the gingerbread itself! Trying to ice the windows and doors was a nightmar...

Edinburgh - Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo is a short bus ride from Princes Street. We arrived nice and early in order to maximise our animal-seeing time. Admittance is £16.50 for adults. There are plenty of animals to see, although sadly we didn’t get to see all of them! The orangutan enclosure was closed for medical reasons and the Sumatran tiger was hiding from us! Zebras Koala Bear Edinburgh Zoo is the only zoo in the UK which plays host to koala bears and giant pandas. There are currently four koalas. Hello Tian Tian Tian TIan with her bamboo It was recently revealed in the news that Tian Tian is pregnant, so the zoo had warned that visitors might not be able to see her. However, Yang Guang will be encouraged to come out for regular feedings. For the pandas, you have to book a viewing slot. During our viewing slot (about 11am), Tian Tian was sat with her back to the visitors eating bamboo. She reached to the side table for more bamboo, nearly losing her balance in the process.
