Edinburgh - Castle Terrace Restaurant

Nearby Edinburgh Castle is Castle Terrace Restaurant, which we visited for lunch. We selected the 3 course lunch set menu at £29.50, which for Michelin starred dining is fantastic value! Also included was an amuse bouche – three things to sample on one dish: black pepper pork, mini hamburger and a “Caesar salad”. This was followed by a pre-starter of jelly and tomato gazpacho with a black olive cracker on the side. For starter, I ate the ham hock trifle: ham underneath a pea puree topped off with savoury ice cream and a crisp. For main course, I chose the free-range chicken with chicken ravioli, a buttery sauce and summer vegetables. Dessert was the Eton mess, very unusual compared to a normal Eton mess. The components are there, just re-imagined in a different way. A new addition is the sesame seed casing around the cream. Although not included, I had a Breakfast tea (from the Eteaket range, which I spoke about previously). Alongside my tea, a selection of sweet t

Edinburgh - Edinburgh Castle

We arrived nice and early to Edinburgh Castle, which opens at 9.30am. Already there were long queue already! Tickets are a little expensive (£16.50 for an adult ticket) but this is a must see attraction if you visit the city. There is the option of the audio tour for a little extra cost, but we chose to go on the free guided tour. Our tour guide, Liz, was a friendly and knowledgeable guide who took the group around the key highlights of the castle grounds and their historical backgrounds. The tour took about 30 minutes, after which we perused the castle at our own leisure. The Lang Steps There is so much history encapsulated in Edinburgh Castle. St Margaret’s Chapel is the oldest building in the city, built in honour of one of the Scottish royals’ wives. She was famed for her benevolence and generosity, always seeking to make sure the poorer people were well fed and clothed. After her death, she was made a saint.  The War Monument contains books dedicated to those who fought

Edinburgh - Museum of Childhood, Greyfriars Kirkyard and Mussel Inn

The Museum of Childhood is perfect for all ages. It contains five floors of toys and games from the ages. It is wonderful to see what kind of toys and entertainment was available to children of different times and backgrounds. There is also one floor devoted to dolls and bears, and the intricate detail of these toys provides a vast contrast to a doll fashioned from an old shoe owned by a child living in poverty. This is a must see if you visit the city, and I was impressed at how many things are in theis musuem! Greyfriars Kirkyard is another important feature of Edinburgh. One reason it is so famous is the story of Greyfriars Bobby. As you walk towards Greyfriars Kirkyard, there are a plethora of cafes and shops named about Bobby, which just goes to show how famous it is. The story goes that after his owner died and was buried, his pet dog Bobby refused to leave and stayed by his grave for the rest of his life -  a true man's best friend. A little further on, a monument to

Edinburgh - Eteaket Tea Room and Ibis Hotel

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon. Luckily for us, the sun was shining as we made our way to the Eteaket tea room on Frederick Street. Eteaket is famed for its teas, and they supply many local restaurants and other cafes. The tea room itself is quite spacious and full of customers, which shows how popular it is. As well as teas, light lunches and afternoon teas are also on the menu; something to suit any occasion. I opted for a high tea, with Royal Earl Grey tea. The high tea is priced at £8.45 and includes half a sandwich of your choice (I had Scottish Ham and Cheddar Cheese), scone (fruit or plain) and a mini cake (I think I had lemon cake). Tea is also included. Eteaket uses loose leaf tea, good quality and better tasting. The waitress also brough a mini timer. When the sands run out, the tea has brewed for long enough and is ready to drink after you remove the filter. What a beautiful cup of tea! The food was tasty and filling too, making it a great value high tea

Edinburgh

I recently returned from a weekend from Edinburgh. It's July, so there were warm sunny spells...and because it is Scotland: wind, rain and gloomy skies. There is so much one can do in Edinburgh, but sadly, we didn't have the time. During my holiday, we saw Edinburgh Castle, Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Zoo, National Museum of Scotland and the Museum of Childhood. Edinburgh is packed with tourists; you can tell it is a popular place to visit. The buildings are quite old and show the historic architecture that the city is famed for. Walking along the Royal Mile, there are a plethora of Scottish souvenir shops and pubs. Grassmarket is where you would find quirky gift shops, small cafes and artisan bakeries. Princes Street features many of the branded shops you see in many cities, showing a modern side to the city. This is indicative of the old and the new which reflects how the city appeals to many people. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. My only regret is that I didn&

My Little Box July Edition - The Road Trip Box

This is box three of My Little Box subscription. After being initially disappointed with the first box I received, last month's box was a pleasant surprise. There were delivery problems with last month, which meant subscribers received their box late last month. This meant less of a wait in between boxes (only two weeks!), yet how does the July box fare? Does it continue to excel? This month's theme is Road Trip, so there are lots of travel goodies included! First item is the Ready To Send Notebook (RRP £3.50) with a Cristal Stylus Bic Pen (RRP £1.40). The idea is to take this on your travels, and jot down all the things you do and see. Seal it up and send to a loved one, so they can read what you have been up to! This is quite a sweet idea, and the Kanako design is lovely! This "Never Stop Exploring" box contains the next item. This is a travel organiser (RRP £10.50) which contains pockets for tickets, passport and money, making it han

More stationery is included - there is a red lollipop pen, a Happy Days fineliner pen and some decorative tape. Although I am not exactly a fan of this print, this Choochoocat sticker pack is great value. Eight sticker sheets are included so for those who like scrapbooking or personalising things, this is a great choice. A Rilakkuma file box which you assemble yourself is a stylish way to store your things. I like this item an
